| Assitej Uganda participated in the Rwandan/Swedish workshops in Kigali in July 2009. These individuals came away very energised. Puppet theatre is a new innovation in Uganda and there is a lot of interest in this art form. Assitej Uganda has participated in many international events; for e.g. representatives from Assitej Uganda have been in Okinawa at Kijimuna festa as visitors; to the Swedish Biannual etc. They have a participant in the Assitej New Generation theatre programme after the Adelaide World Congress, Daniel Settaba. Daniel has headed up a team, Roots Africa, to work with communities in Uganda. A theatre company in Entebbe is now twinned with a theatre company in Sweden. Workshops were held for music, dance teachers, which created a nucleus of people who are doing most of our work in training and working with grassroot communities. Assitej Uganda is working on a regional festival of theatre involving the schools, to be held in March 2010 in Kampala. As a result of lobbying for theatre for children and young people to government, we have now ensured that music, dance and drama will be included in school syllabus. A new member of Assitej Uganda is Theatre Factory, a theatre company based at the National Theatre, Kampala. Theatre Factory hosts the renowned ComedyNite @ National Theatre every Thursday irrespective of public holidays. They also produce the hilarious BARBED WIRE TV SERIES on NTV Uganda. They handle specialised products in Film, Radio, Television and Theatre. |
